This week, we’re featuring Aphasia DOOR (Aphasia Desirability of Outcome Ranking).
Measuring what matters
How do we know whether aphasia therapy is making a difference to what matters most to people with aphasia?
For many years, researchers have measured changes across a range of areas, such as language and communication. Usually in intervention trials, researchers have to select just one primary measure. Aphasia DOOR will combine several domains that are important to people with aphasia, so that trials can measure and report changes across domains that reflect what is meaningful to people with aphasia.
Importantly, the project has been developed with people who have lived experience of aphasia. Their voices are guiding how future aphasia research measures success.
Progress so far
We have successfully completed Phase 1 of the project and developed a draft Aphasia DOOR.
This draft is an important milestone, but we want to make sure the final version truly reflects the priorities and experiences of people living with aphasia.
Phase 2 begins in July
The next stage of the project begins in July 2026.
During Phase 2, we will refine and finalise the Aphasia DOOR, with direct input from people with aphasia.
We are currently looking for 10 people with aphasia to participate in this phase of the research.
By taking part, participants will help shape a tool that could improve how aphasia therapies are evaluated in future research studies, ensuring that research focuses on the changes that are most meaningful to people living with aphasia.
