Seminar 57 – How do speech pathologists deliver services to bi/multilingual adults with aphasia in a hospital and healthcare setting? Presentation by: Samantha Siyambalapitiya.
This presentation will discuss findings from a qualitative case study conducted at a Queensland hospital exploring the current practice of speech pathologists working with bi/multilingual adults with aphasia. The presentation will describe how speech pathologists deliver services to bi/multilingual adults against a backdrop of limited relevant evidence and resources. Samantha is a speech pathologist and Senior Lecturer at Griffith University with over 20 years experience across roles as a clinician, tertiary educator and researcher. Samantha’s research explores culturally responsive healthcare, in particular for the vulnerable group of people who experience both communication disability and cultural/linguistic differences.
Seminar 56 – “Communication Disability plays a massive role” Improving management of hospital falls in patients with communication disability after stroke Presentation by: Dr Rebecca Sullivan.
Participants will learn how specific aspects of communication disability impacts all areas of falls management in hospital patients with stroke. Through understanding the unique aspects of communication disability and common circumstances of falls, speech pathologists will be better able to identify and respond to the needs of these patients in relation to falls. Rebecca is an early career researcher at La Trobe University, focusing on improving the care and safety of hospital patients with communication difficulties, with a particular interest in falls. She has extensive clinical experience working with adults experiencing communication and swallowing difficulties in hospital and community settings.
Seminar 55 – Measuring Real-World Communication of People with Aphasia: Preliminary Findings & Ethical Considerations Presentation by: Dr. Leora R. Cherney, and Laura E. Kinsey.
Attendees will learn about innovative wearable technologies used to measure real-world communication. Preliminary findings as well as feasibility and acceptability will be discussed. Ethical considerations for collecting intimate data that presents novel privacy and confidentiality considerations will be reviewed in addition to data collection barriers and lessons learned. Leora R. Cherney, PhD, is the Scientific Chair of Think and Speak at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) and Professor of both Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Communication Sciences & Disorders at Northwestern University. She has 40+ years of clinical and research experience in adult neurologic communication disorders. Laura E. Kinsey, MS, CCC-SLP, is a Research Speech-Language Pathologist at the Centre for Aphasia Research & Treatment at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Her interests include leveraging technology to support individuals with aphasia, advocating for communication accessibility, and incorporating participant experiences and feedback into the research process.
