Our M-MAT Tele study is offering 30 hours of aphasia therapy for people with aphasia following a stroke. It’s delivered over telehealth and available anywhere in Australia 🇦🇺.

We are looking for Australian adults who:

  • Have aphasia from a stroke which happened in the last 10 months
  • Spoke English before their stroke
  • Don’t have another neurological condition (for example: head injury, dementia)
  • Can start therapy 3-12 months after their stroke
  • Can use a tablet, iPad or computer for online therapy
  • Don’t have severe slurred speech or severe apraxia of speech (we can check for you)

What is M-MAT?

M-MAT is a type of therapy that helps people with aphasia improve their spoken communication.
Speech pathologists provide M-MAT in small groups of people with aphasia (3 people).
 In M-MAT, people practice using nouns (naming words) and verbs (action words), and then put them into phrases and sentences using group language games.

Results from the COMPARE trial (see here) show that M-MAT can improve:

  • the ability to find the right word (for certain words)
  • everyday communication
  • communication-related quality of life

In the COMPARE trial, the therapy was provided at a low-moderate intensity (30 hours of treatment across 5 weeks) and was delivered face to face in a group setting.

Why are we looking at M-MAT delivered over telehealth?

We want to research delivering M-MAT over telehealth.
Providing aphasia therapy over telehealth can reduce the need for travel.  We developed M-MAT for telehealth (M-MAT Tele) by co-designing with clinicians and people with aphasia. Now, we want to test it.
