Multi-modality Aphasia Therapy: theory, evidence, and practical implementation strategies

Dear Colleagues

Dr John Pierce and Professor Miranda Rose are excited to be presenting a half-day workshop  organised by Speech Pathologists in Adult Rehabilitation on Multi-modality Aphasia Therapy (M-MAT) theory, evidence, and practical implementation strategies.

Outline: This half-day professional development event is designed to equip clinicians with the theory and hands-on skills to deliver Multi-Modality Aphasia Therapy (M-MAT), an evidence-based group treatment that improves verbal language and communication in people with aphasia.

Led by Professor Miranda Rose and Dr John Pierce, this session will explore:

  • The development history and mechanisms underpinning M-MAT
  • The evidence base from clinical trials supporting M-MAT
  • How to structure and deliver M-MAT sessions, including adaptations for different clinical settings
  • Practical resources to support implementation

Participants will also receive step-by-step training in the M-MAT protocol and engage in hands-on practice of:

  • Therapy activities and cueing hierarchies
  • Linguistic level selection and progression
  • Group formation and session planning
  • Scoring and outcome tracking.
