Last week we paused to celebrate all that we have achieved in our first 6 years with the NHMRC funding to establish the Aphasia CRE as a multi-disciplinary research centre for aphasia.
The team under the guidance of our Director, Prof Miranda Rose, managed to build an enormous amount of capacity with our initial NHMRC grant from 2018 – we have managed over 100 projects across the 5 programs of research and our team have also attracted over $26m in further funding for aphasia research. We continue on in the Aphasia CRE office supporting the Australia wide team and international collaborations. We look forward to continuing with all our projects and the work ahead to improve the lives of people with aphasia.
Included below are statistics from 2019 – mid 2024 pictured but we are proud to have nurtured 50 HDR students (mostly PhD and a few Masters) who have focussed their studies on the many areas of aphasia research, 26 have now graduated and can be super proud that they have contributed to aphasia research and they are out there continuing their great work.

CELEBRATION EVENTS –
Day 1- What a wonderful day celebrating with our Australia wide team, HDR students, affiliates, health professionals and our research partners with lived experience of aphasia.
Today we heard about many of the amazing aphasia research projects that we’ve been working on over the last 6 years and how we’ve made great inroads into improving lives for people with aphasia.
We are all looking forward to a bright future in aphasia research and continuing with the wonderful interdisciplinary collaboration that the Aphasia CRE has enabled to improve the lives of people with aphasia.
Day 2- Celebrating the Aphasia CRE 2019-2024 we had a fantastic communicatively accessible (aphasia friendly) day of presentations.
We heard from Lucy and JD (Janet) about what is like leading a group in the Hub &Spoke peer led aphasia groups project trialling in Ballarat.
Claire presented on co-designing an international aphasia awareness program.
Nelson told us about his PhD work with investigating and developing effective carer supports.
Lauren showed us how the HealthTalk app is being developed and tested at Epworth hospital to improve communication for people with communication difficulties.
John gave us a sneak peek of the amazing new Communication Connect platform enabling self managed recovery and rehabilitation through a digital platform, connecting people with aphasia, carers and health professionals to a wealth of useful resources with clever use of the latest in AI technology.
Attendees enjoyed meeting other aphasia community members and talking with researchers and providing ideas and the feedback that is integral to co-designed research projects.
