For many 2022 was a year that offered hope for reconnection, freedom, and flow. In the Aphasia CRE, we once again began to meet people with aphasia and their families, and our clinical partners face-to-face. We also recommenced many research projects that had been forced to pause due to the COVID restrictions. I was so grateful to our staff, students, and research partners who despite these frequent interruptions and barriers to progress, kept positive attitudes and pressed forward with great perseverance. Because of the commitment and strength of these individuals and teams, the Aphasia CRE once again has made enormous progress on our goals to reduce the disability associated with aphasia and to improve the quality of life for people living with aphasia.
Our annual report showcases the achievement of our team. Of particular note the Aphasia CRE was named in The Australian’s 2022 Annual Research Awards as one of the top 5 research institutions in the area of Disability and Rehabilitation. This national metrics-based award highlights the high calibre of the work done in the Centre.
We were proud to host the Aphasia CRE Student Showcase and the 2022 Australasian Symposium of Australia at La Trobe University in November. These events bought together over 200 people living with aphasia, health professionals, students, and researchers focused on improving the lives of people living with aphasia. The networking, exchange of ideas, and community building at these events was so strong and reflected the collaboratively developed vision we hold for a better future for people living with aphasia.
Thank you to our staff, partners, students, and affiliates for all you do and have achieved. Thank you to our community of practice members who engage with us to advise on research directions and to implement our research findings. We hope you enjoy this annual report and look forward to your feedback and engagement.
