Cultural security for Aboriginal consumers and communities in clinical practice and research: What does
it look like?
The presentation will reflect on the concept of cultural security and will illustrate with examples drawn from recent research projects led by and undertaken with Aboriginal people with brain injury and their families in Western Australia. Principles for both clinical practice and future research will be discussed.

Guest speakers:

Professor Beth Armstrong is Foundation Chair in Speech Pathology at Edith Cowan University in Perth. She leads a
multidisciplinary team of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal researchers focused on improving service delivery and quality of life for Aboriginal people after brain injury.

Kerri Colegate is a Noongar/Yamatji woman from the Balladong/Yuat clans, mother of 2 adult children and grandmother to three. She has her own consultancy business – KM Noongar Consultancy Services, specializing in disability support, capacity building and cultural consultancy. She is also currently Research Project Manager of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander substudy of the AUS-mTBI project based at Edith Cowan University.

Olivia Sullivan is an experienced clinical speech pathologist working in Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service. She has a specific interesting in optimising her clinical practice when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and families and will present on her clinical experiences and learnings.
