A little help from my friends: Researching and promoting social connection in people with aphasia.

In this seminar, we highlight the deleterious mental, physical and communication effects of social isolation. Then, we will discuss recently developed therapy approaches that address social connectedness. We will focus on our intervention, Aphasia: Nurturing Connection, Honouring Ongoing Relationships (ANCHOR), describing how we created this program, and how we are assessing its efficacy.
Brent E. Archer is a professor and directs the Aphasia CHAT (Conversation Helps All take part) at Bowling Green State University. Brent’s research interests include conversation-based assessments and treatments for people with aphasia and social connectedness after brain injury. In 2020, Brent was chosen as a Tavistock Aphasia Distinguished Scholar.
Jamie H. Azios is the Doris B. Hawthorne Endowed Chair at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Her research interests include co-constructed conversation in aphasia, and the impact of communicative environments on social inclusion. She has published articles related to communication access, and social participation and inclusion.
