Congratulations to Dr Jasvinder Sekhon from La Trobe University for completing her PhD. Jas’ thesis was titled: Enabling Speech-Language Pathologists to Feel Confident and Competent in Counselling for Supporting Psychological Wellbeing in People Affected by Post-Stroke Aphasia.
Jas’ thesis included a systematic review of education that enabled SLPs to support psychological wellbeing in post-stroke aphasia, a survey study of current counselling education provided to SLP students and trialed a education program for improving SLP confidence and self-reported competence for counselling in post-stroke aphasia rehabilitation.
The research reported in her thesis provides evidence of the limited education currently available for SLPs in counselling to support people affected by post-stroke aphasia. It also provides evidence of feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a counselling education program aimed at improving SLPs’ self-efficacy and self-rated competency for supporting psychological wellbeing.
